Summer Camp is Back!

The Saugatuck Digital Arts Workshop will make a triumphant return to in-person classes for our 2021 Summer Camp.  We are going to warm up the big computers, update all the software and get back to the business of teaching kids how to make art with computers.  We can’t wait — there’s so much to create and learn.

Every week of our Summer Camp is a new adventure. We custom build our classes around the creative interests of our students. Our focus is on nurturing individual skills while helping our students create digital arts masterpieces — independently and in small groups. Let us help build a unique camp experience for the future content creators in your family.  After so much time spent online, our digital arts workshop* will be a place of inspiration for aspiring middle-school and high-school artists to share and collaborate.

Our camp classes include the digital arts media below… and more!

Animation — Every day we celebrate animation – an art form where an artist can literally make anything do whatever their imagination conjures up. Through group tutorials and individual project development, campers learn the art and craft of animation & storytelling.

Digital Photography — we teach young photographers about composition, the digital darkroom, camera mastery, RAW, portfolio development as well as the history and science of photography.

Video & Digital Storytelling — Students learn to craft stories using video, pictures and sound using a variety of both simple (Apple iMovie and Garage Band) and sophisticated (Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects) software.

Digital Sound & Music — Campers will be introduced to the fundamentals of creating, editing and producing digital sound using professional Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) software including Apple Logic, GarageBand, Audition and Audacity.

Creative Coding & Maker Stuff — The simplest way to make art with computers is with code. Type a few lines of text, push a button and watch the magic happen. That’s what Creative Coding is all about, from “Hello World,” to particle systems, to interactivity and beyond.  We teach both Scratch and P5js and are eager to explore Raspberry Pis/Arduinos with interested campers.

Our team have active imaginations and we are always open to learning/teaching new things.

WEEK ONE of 2021 SUMMER CAMP STARTS IN:

What's It All About?

Alchemy

The power or process of transforming something common into something special.

Potters master the wheel and clay; painters master pigments and brushwork; sculptors manipulate rock with hammers and chisels. Digital artists – which in 2021 include potters, painters and sculptors – are empowered by using and mastering software. At Saugatuck Digital Arts we believe that creative alchemy occurs at the intersection of craftsmanship and inspiration and that belief underpins our operating philosophy.

Who's In Charge?

Mike Stuttman
Founder and Managing Director

An animator and digital arts evangelist, Mike is the Founder and Managing Director of the Saugatuck Digital Arts Workshop, LLC. Reared on developer, stop bath, fixer and grains of silver on film — with degrees in mathematics and computer art, and with over 20 years’ of advertising agency experience, he has been an enthusiastic participant in a content creation revolution that has irrevocably transformed the worlds of business and art.

Creativity, technology and education have been at the core of Mike’s personal and professional interests. He is a lifelong student – and an informed consumer of – technical arts education: He studied photography and animation at Rochester Institute of Technology; Videography at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston; Mathematics and film making at the University of Colorado in Boulder (BFA); and Computer Art and Animation at the School of Visual Arts in New York (MFA). He has brought the best aspects of those experiences into his education philosophy for the Saugatuck Digital Arts Workshop – which is to teach the craft behind digital art making.
